What Is Kakunodate Like in Each Season? Cherry Blossoms, Festivals and Snow

This guide is for visitors deciding when to go to Kakunodate. It follows the English pages of the Tazawako and Kakunodate Tourism Association and of Semboku City, which we read on 2026-10-04. Event dates can shift with the weather, so check the current year's announcement.

Spring: the cherry blossom festival

The Kakunodate Cherry Blossom Festival runs from April 15 to May 5 every year and attracts over 1.2 million visitors, according to the association. It adds that the dates may change with the blooming conditions. The weeping cherries along the samurai residence street, which include trees designated as natural monuments and some over 300 years old, bloom first. The association calls the street the number one viewing spot, notes that the crowds thin out in the evening, and recommends the night illumination. Trees in front of the Kakunodate Cherry Bark Craft Museum often bloom two to three days later because of the shade.

Along the Hinokinai River embankment a row of Somei Yoshino cherry trees stretches for 2 kilometres. They start to bloom one to two days after the weeping cherries and peak about five days after they begin. From Kojoyama, 168 metres high, you can look over both. The page lists a municipal car park at 500 yen for ordinary cars with about 180 spaces and a temporary car park on the samurai street at 500 yen with about 400 spaces, and says free car parks also exist. The association's seasonal page also names the dogtooth violet (katakuri) colonies as a spring sight.

Summer and early September: the Yama festival

Semboku City describes the Kakunodate Festival, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, as running from September 7 to 9. Floats parade through the historic streets toward Shinmeisha Shrine and Jojuin Yakushido Temple. Eighteen neighbourhood associations take part, each with its own float decorated with life-sized samurai and kabuki dolls of about 30 kilograms each. The route is decided by the people pulling the float, and when two floats meet head-on they negotiate who gives way; if they cannot agree, the floats are pushed against each other. The association's seasonal page also lists Lake Tazawa swimming and the Sasara dance event in summer.

Autumn: foliage and light-up

The association says the beech and maple trees turn colour in autumn, with Dakigaeri Valley, Nyuto Onsenkyo and Akita Komagatake as the popular spots, and that the samurai street has an autumn foliage light-up. It also names the Saimyoji chestnut and new rice harvest as seasonal foods.

Dakigaeri Valley is called the Yabakei of Tohoku, with primeval forest on both banks, waterfalls and a blue stream. A well-maintained walking trail leads past rock formations and rapids, and the view from the suspension bridge Kami no Iwabashi is described as magnificent. It is 5 minutes by car from JR Kodai Station, 15 minutes from JR Kakunodate Station and 20 minutes from JR Tazawako Station.

Winter: fire and snow

The Hiburi Kamakura is held on the evening of February 14 in each neighbourhood. A one-metre rope is tied to a sack of coals, set alight and swung around the body; the city says the fire is meant to drive bad luck from the rice fields. The Kamihinokinai Paper Balloon Festival takes place on February 10, according to the access page. For snow and hot springs, the association points to the many hot spring inns of Semboku City and to the Tazawako ski area, the largest in Akita.

Planning around the blossom season

The samurai residence street is a 15-minute walk from JR Kakunodate Station, and the association lists a free Wi-Fi network named Tazawako_Bukeyashiki_Free Wifi there. Kojoyama is described as a relatively easy walking course, so the view can be added to a visit on foot. Because the weeping cherries and the riverside trees bloom a few days apart, a stay of two or three days gives you a better chance of seeing both in flower.
