How Do You Get to Kakunodate and Get Around the Samurai District?
This guide is for visitors who want to reach Kakunodate, the castle town in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture, and find their way around it. It follows the English pages of the Tazawako and Kakunodate Tourism Association's official travel guide and of Semboku City's sightseeing site. We read them on 2026-10-04. Fares and timetables change, so confirm them before you travel.
Where Kakunodate is
The tourism association's access page places Semboku City in the central eastern part of Akita Prefecture, next to Iwate Prefecture. Lake Tazawa, the deepest lake in Japan, lies almost in the centre of the city. Kakunodate and Tazawako are the two JR stations that visitors use, both on the Akita Shinkansen.
By Shinkansen
The tourism association lists the fastest times to Kakunodate Station: about 3 hours 12 minutes from Tokyo, about 6 hours from Shin-Osaka (the Tokaido Shinkansen to Tokyo, then the Akita Shinkansen), about 1 hour 29 minutes from Sendai, about 44 minutes from Morioka and about 42 minutes from Akita. The city's own page gives slightly different figures: about 3 hours from Tokyo, 1 hour 30 minutes from Sendai and 45 minutes from both Morioka and Akita. Treat these as rough guides and check the timetable. For Nishiki, in the south of the city, the association points to the Akita Nairiku Line.
By air and from Akita Airport
The access page names Akita Airport as the nearest airport, with flights from Tokyo Haneda, Osaka Itami, Sapporo (New Chitose and Okadama) and Nagoya Chubu. From the airport it describes a reservation-based shared taxi called the Airport Liner, which takes about 1 hour to the Kakunodate area. Reservations are required: by phone until 5:00 PM on the day before, or online until 5:00 PM two days before. The page also mentions a limousine bus between Akita Airport and Akita Station, about 40 minutes, for connecting to the Shinkansen.
By highway bus and by car
The access page lists two highway buses from Tokyo: one operated by Ugo Transportation, about 11 hours from Tokyo Station (Yaesu South Exit), and one by Akita Chuo Kotsu from Shinjuku via Omiya to Akita City, 8 hours 30 minutes. It asks you to check each company's website for fares. By car, the city's page gives Morioka to Kakunodate or Tazawako in about 50 to 80 minutes on Route 46, and the same for Akita on Routes 13 and 46. Tokyo to Morioka on the Tohoku Expressway is listed at 6 hours 30 minutes. The association's visitor FAQ also has entries on winter road conditions from December to March.
Getting around Kakunodate
The tourism association says the town is about 5 km around. Starting from Kakunodate Station, it is about a 15-minute walk to Uchimachi and the samurai residence street, and the full loop through Sotomachi and Tamachi back to the station is about 5 km. Rickshaws, rental bicycles and taxis are available if walking is hard. Its transportation page lists sightseeing taxis, a rental car dealer, a bicycle rental shop, three rickshaw operators and a municipal cherry-blossom-avenue car park a short walk from the samurai street.
The Semboku City Tourist Information Center, called Kakunodate Ekimae-Gura, is in a white-walled kura building to your right as you leave JR Kakunodate Station. It is open 9:00 to 18:00, and until 17:30 from October to March. It offers brochures and maps, directions to the samurai street, and a rest area.
Going on to Lake Tazawa, Dakigaeri and the hot springs
- Lake Tazawa: take the Nyuto Line bus from JR Tazawako Station to Shirahama, about 15 minutes.
- Nyuto Onsenkyo: the same Nyuto Line bus, about 45 minutes. The nearest stop depends on your inn.
- Dakigaeri Valley: there is no regular bus. A taxi is about 15 minutes from Kakunodate Station, or you can use the on-demand transport service from Kakunodate.
